History of S.C. Johnson & Son

Dating back to 1886 when Samuel Curtis Johnson acquired the parquet flooring division from the Racine Hardware Manufacturing Company, SC Johnson stands as one of the oldest family owned businesses in the United States.

After early success with floor care products such as Johnson’s Prepared Wax, Johnson’s Dance Wax and Johnson’s Wood Dye, Herbert Fisk Johnson Sr (son of Samuel Curtis), started the firms global expansion in 1914 by founding a headquarters in the UK.

Designed by American architect Frank Lloyd Wright, the Johnson Wax Administration Building was constructed in 1936, along with the 14 story Johnson Wax Research Tower in 1950. Still operating as the global headquarters for SC Johnson & Son (in Racine, Wisconsin), both became officially listed as National Historic Landmarks in 1976.

The Research Tower was the primary location for SC Johnson’s R&D efforts (up until the 1980s), birthplace to beloved brands including Pledge, Glade and Raid.

With product ranges that cover household cleaning, air fresheners, pest control, food storage, personal hygiene and shoe care, SC Johnson is now a truly multinational corporation, supplying goods all over the world.

Deb Group

In 2015, SC Johnson acquired the Deb Group from Charterhouse Capital Partners. Originally operating as Deb Limited, this British company was based in Derbyshire, later purchasing Stoko Professional Skin Care from German firm Evonik Industries.

SC Johnson has since incorporated the product ranges from Deb Group into their own line up including Swarfega, Protect, Estesol, and Cutan, all unified under its SC Johnson Professional brand.
